Going Green-How To Save Money With Homemade Energy
02/10/2009 - By J. Davidson
With today’s energy costs constantly on the rise, everyone is looking for new ways to conserve on their energy bills. Put your thoughts toward Going Green-How To Save Money with Homemade Energy.
Solar Panels and Wind Generators are the best renewable energy resources that will save you a bundle. Let’s take a quick look on conserving energy first and show you how to save your hard earned dollars and even put money back in your pocket.
Let’s start saving the money. Take a walk around your house and make notes of areas in your home where you can save. Let me give you some places to start looking and once you have noticed whether or not these areas need improving, you can make the determination to fix the problem areas or let the dollars fly out the window.
As you do a simple walk through, look at the obvious first. Do you have air leaks coming from around doors or windows and how efficient are they? See if there is an “Energy Star” rating on them. This will let you know that they are of the upmost quality for conserving energy. Check to see if there is cold air coming from your electrical outlets or switch plates. If you do, you can tighten these areas up by very inexpensive solutions from your local home building supply store such as weather stripping and caulking to make a good air tight seal. Any opening from the outside in is a potential air leak if not sealed properly. You may or may not know how well your home is insulated but if you have a way to check or have this checked out by a professional, see if the ceiling and walls are properly insulated. Going Green-How to save money with homemade energy starts by conserving what you already have to work with.
Next, think about your heating. This is the largest energy user in our homes. Keep your thermostat set at a lower, yet comfortable setting. Turn it down when you leave your home. If you have a programmable thermostat utilize the features and keep it set lower when there is no one in the house. Have a furnace inspection and cleaning done periodically to be sure it is operating safely and to its best efficiency. Change the filters once a month during the coldest months. Keep your hot air registers and ductwork clean. If you have a room that is not being used, close the warm air vent and keep the doors closed but be careful in these areas especially if you have pipes that could freeze.
The water heater is one of the most used appliances in our homes. It is used on a daily basis. Focus on keeping the temperature setting down to a setting of no higher than 120 degrees F. Insulation blankets will help maintain the heat within the water heater so it doesn’t lose as much heat when not in use. Check for leaky faucets also, not only will your water bill go up but, if it is on the hot water side, the water heater will have a higher demand. Take shorter showers instead of baths and install a low-flow showerhead. Showers generally use half the hot water that baths do.
Although a new energy efficient refrigerator is costly, your old model could be using up 50% of your monthly bill. Unplug chargers when not in use. Turn off your computer monitor when not using it. Unplug anything that is not being used at the time. Pre-wash or soak your clothes before washing. Be sure the lint trap in the dryer is clean at every use.
Lighting accounts for 5-10% of total energy in the average home. Consider the advantages of using “Energy Star” compact fluorescent lightbulbs. They use less than 25% of standard bulbs and last 10 times longer. These can be found at local building supply stores such as Home Depot and others.
Now comes the great part about Going Green-How To Save Money With Homemade Energy. Solar Panels and Wind Generators. Without boring you with a lot of technical information on how a solar panel works it basically takes the energy from sunlight and converts it into usable energy such as electricity. Wind Generators work with the wind that allows the blades to turn the generator which produces electrical energy that is then stored in batteries or transferred to home power grids. There are companies that will install solar panels and/or wind generators to help with your heating and electrical needs for thousands of dollars but did you know you can build your own for a fraction of the cost? That’s right! Renewable energy at a fraction of the cost!
Advantages of renewable energy are simple. You can save your hard earned dollars that you put towards your monthly energy costs, help the environment, and you may be even able to qualify for a credit from the Federal Government to get money back by converting a part of or all your home to homemade energy. For example, did you know that if your purchase plans and build a wind generator or solar panels with Obama's home energy grant program you can be rewarded by the Federal Government by receiving funding to help with their plan on reducing our dependence on fossil fuels? This is one of their top agenda items for 2009. Depending on what you do, there has been reported funding of anywhere from $600-$2000! That’s a lot of money! You may even get the power company to pay you.
So you see by Going Green-How To Save Money With Homemade Energy is just the start. Conserve the resources that we have and save yourself hundreds each month, put money back into your pocket that you so well deserve by creating your own homemade energy with wind and/or solar.
